For an axe of its stature, the Ritual Blade’s Weight rating is only 10, making it easily usable by most characters regardless of your build. Though its damage output dwindles mid-game once you begin to upgrade other weapons, the Ritual Blade is a powerful early-game tool, particularly for those who invest in Strength and Endurance stats in Demon’s Souls first stages. It was true in 2009, when developer FromSoftware released the mechanically groundbreaking role-playing game on PlayStation 3, and remains true for Bluepoint Games’ remake, released alongside Sony’s PlayStation 5 this week. Yes, Demon’s Souls is often as difficult as this series’ reputation would lead you to believe it is, but I’m struck by how balanced much of this game feels. A big part of the credit there has to go to the game’s character building and equipment systems. There are some builds that are “better” (or more optimized) than others, but generally speaking, it’s easy to build your character based on your preferences rather than what you assume the game wants you to do.

In Demon’s Souls Remake, your main place of residence and starting point is an area called Nexus. This area is a safe world and a connection point between other worlds, and ghosts and survivors stay there to travel to other parts of Boletaria through the various portals in the area. And of course, all kinds of deadly and ruthless enemies and monsters that are thirsty for your blood or better to say, for your soul. You beat the bass, opening another starting point for another area on the Nexus.

Music is often a part of game’s that holds up to time the best, but in this case, it was mostly about providing higher-quality cleaner audio which can happen in modern game development thanks to the advancement of technology. Most players likely won’t notice as good audio should go unnoticed due to it feeling seamless, but this is an improvement for the better in the remake which makes the game feel a bit more modern in 2020 and beyond. The remake has remedied this issue and implemented a character creator worthy of even the greatest RPG. Players can now make their characters look however they want and more. After playing around with it for a short while, players will realize that it is far different than the lackluster character creator of games past.

Thanks to the impressive horsepower of the PlayStation 5, players can easily dive back in after dying a gruesome death or fast-travel to a different location. From rings, to weapons and even the Penetrator armor set (shown above), though the latter is a bit tricky to obtain. A giant sword capable of broad, sweeping strikes that can hit multiple enemies, it’s perfect for taking out the dregs of Boletaria early on. 100vip can prevent your character from ever getting overwhelmed by enemy groups, especially as you are still trying to build up your character’s health. Repeated attacks will also allow you to plow past an enemy’s guard, albeit at a significant stamina cost.

For example, the miners in Stonefang Tunnel are weak to piercing weapons like rapiers, and Phalanx is weak to fire (hence why you get so many firebombs in the game’s first level). I recommend carrying a shield at almost all times, in order to defend yourself and parry blows. If you’re playing as Royalty, you’ll start with a catalyst (a magic wand, basically), but if you didn’t and want to cast magic spells like fireballs, you’ll need to buy or find one. For miracles, which includes healing and curing spells, you’ll need a talisman. You can return to body form by using a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes, a consumable item, or by beating a Major Demon (aka a boss). While body form has its advantages, namely in the form of your normal HP levels and the ability to summon other friendly players to aid you in boss fights, it also leaves you susceptible to being invaded by other players.

BluePoint Games has already shown great prowess in remaking games, and with a title like Shadow de Colossus, it has proven to be a studio that has a lot to say. That’s why Sony, as an important launch title for the PlayStation 5 console, has given the Demon’s Souls remake to this manufacturer, and I have to say that this studio really worked great. Basically, in a remake game, the first and most important change in it is related to the graphics upgrade, and in fact, the game is rebuilt based on the original game, but with the quality of the world. In Demon’s Souls Remake, the whole game has been visually updated and all the animations have been updated, and incidentally, this animation has also affected the gameplay. Which, of course, is natural because they could not put the same old animations of the original game in this title.

These are the main currency of the game and are used to buy items, repair equipment and upgrade not only the player but also your weapons too. Like other Piercing weapons, this sword scales with your Dexterity, making it an effective choice for character builds that focus on a weapon’s finesse. In combat, this massive blade feels like an unusual mix of slashing, thrusting, and polearm weapons, so you should make sure to familiarize yourself with its diverse attacks before running headlong into a horde of demons. It’s that gorgeous, modern, big-budget presentation that may cause a sense of friction with players who will experience Demon’s Souls for the first time, or will do so in the context of FromSoftware’s subsequent games. Games like Dark Souls refined the formula established by Demon’s Souls, while Bloodborne and Sekiro streamlined it further. Reverting to the hallowed ground of Demon’s Souls, and its experimental and quirky gameplay rules, may feel at odds with its looks.

A host of other demons and unholy creatures also appear, destroying the living and turning them into soulless monsters. Players can fight massive dragons and other colossal threats standing in their way. Co-op is another returning feature from the original, which can alloow players to fight demons together or each other by invading their worlds with the Black Eye Stone. In a game full of ruthless and evil demons, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to band together to improve each other’s chances of winning.

The weapon scales very well with your Magic stat, and it allows you to passively regenerate mana while it is equipped.

Initially, this could have been attributed to Sony’s PC efforts being focused on bringing PS4 titles over first. But given how Returnal is now primed for a February 2023 PC launch, things might be slowly changing. While most titles have benefited from the PS5 Pro’s power, some of them have done better than the others.
