Various ports after its original pokemontoto release, Red Dead Redemption is still very much alive. This PC port shows us one of the best versions of the game to date. The identity of the first game is felt in the sequel and although the game is not free from flaws, it can be a great feast, especially if someone feels “quite hungry.”
While it retains some of its predecessor’s flaws, that’s part of the charm. Rooms that you’ll have passed through literally 100 times will be revealed to hold incredible secrets once a certain clue has been deciphered. An easy example of this might be if you’re looking to light a candle, to do so you’d need to combine the Metal Detector and a Magnifying Glass.
For example, it is simple and nearly seamless to switch to another family with the click of a button, making you feel as if you are truly controlling everyone–which was, admittedly, frustrating at times. There are also entire menus dedicated to analyzing your community, such as one that reports how many Zois had bad dreams last night. While I don’t quite understand the reasoning for this, I’ll admit I did love getting to observe these peculiar little stats. Atomfall’s skill tree is quite streamlined, but to be fair it probably didn’t really need to be overly elaborate given the story’s short and sweet 15-hour length. However, if you’re more melee-focussed than I am you might opt for the buff that increases damage output with each melee-inflicted kill, or enhancing the power of the kick attack to stagger enemies for longer, for example. It’s an old-school take on a game website in the overcomplicated modern age, which is welcome.
I was never completely sure if the fight I was getting into was going to be fierce or a total farce – it seems like you can’t take some inspiration from Fallout without also adopting some of its jank. Thus, I quickly settled into a slower and steadier stealth approach, particularly once I got my hands on a bow during my battles with the druids in the Casterfell Woods zone. Pretty much the only thing about it that isn’t very British is the weather. With no weather system or day/night cycle, it’s nothing but sunshine in Atomfall’s quarantine zone. This not only results in one of the least dreary post-apocalyptic game worlds I’ve ever explored, but it also makes for a startling contrast every time you transition into the dark depths of one of its many subterranean bunkers and caves. December 5, 2024 • 2024 was a surprising year — games from small teams rocketed up the charts, while big releases from major companies slowed.
Being able to explore unimpeded is paramount because Outlaws does such a great job teasing you with secrets to find or opportunities to pursue in an extremely organic way as you move through its four main worlds. That effectively gives you three weapons to swap between, even if they’re all coming out of the same barrel. It’s useful and satisfying for the most part, although I did find Kay would occasionally pump some stylish, slow-motion blaster rounds directly into the cover in front of her rather than the target I had selected.

The SteamWorld franchise doesn’t iterate with sequels often, but when it does, you can count on it being worthwhile. SteamWorld Heist 2 takes the foundation built by its turn-based ricochet strategy game predecessor and builds and expands on it in every way. The missions and the world are bigger, and there’s tons more to do. A new class system lets you mix and match powerful abilities into a mind-boggling array of possibilities, and a smart overleveling system helps stave off the pain of grinding. Not only that but you can outfit your characters, upgrade your ship, earn special unique skills for each character, and more.
This is one of those things I imagine will become less and less of an problem as time goes on, but at least for now these technical issues can be a real drag. Unfortunately, there’s no science behind a score, no algorithm that can be run to “get it right” for every single reader. It evolves as a process from a reviewer playing through a game, talking with the senior staff about the experience, going through several edits and revisions to make sure the argument is air-tight, and looking at how it stacks up against other similar games, and more.

Thanks to the magic of multiple save files, after 22 hours, I’d seen five of the possible six (and I’m still trying to work out how to get that final one). All of these mediums are art forms, and the goal of art is to inspire an emotional reaction in its audience. Therefore, what we’re doing in reviews is talking about how a given work affects us emotionally when we watch or read or play it – and the review is the inherently subjective perspective of an individual critic. When we then summarize that review into a score, we’re not doing any kind of calculation; there’s no “default” score that’s added to or subtracted from to arrive at the final number, and no qualities or features (or lack thereof) are worth a prescribed number of points. That’s because scores aren’t math – they are code, with each number corresponding to a description on our scale. In the world of video game journalism, some websites stand out.
